In June, Dr. Jackson partnered with the Education and Outreach Committee of the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association, 1000 Friends of Oregon, the Oregon Environmental Council, and the Oregon Transportation and Growth Management Program to spread the message of Designing Healthy Communities across the state. Traveling to six cities and meeting with more than 650 people, Dr. Jackson talked the talk and walked the walk of DHC.

Meeting in libraries and city auditoriums, and leading discussions at luncheons, Dr. Jackson repeated the core message: we must account for human health when implementing community design. “Those of you who are builders and developers, you are health officials. Those of you who oversee transportation plans or urban plans are health officials. So much of the health issue is determined in your world, not in the medical world,” he said to the audience in Portland, as 1000 friends of Oregon reports.

Dr. Jackson also walked the walk, embarking on a downtown stroll in Roseburg with city officials.  The city walk highlighted Roseburg’s healthy communities initiatives, such as the new bicycle path and a proposal for a city plaza.
